For warm up purposes, you can let a diesel engine idle anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. If you're in a cold environment that's below 50 degrees, then let it idle for 3 to 5 minutes. Below zero temperatures, may need up to 7 minutes to warm up.
Typically, a well-maintained diesel engine can last between 300,000 to 500,000 miles, and in some cases, even beyond.
Under normal conditions, you should get an oil change for your diesel engine every 3,000 to 5,000 miles using conventional oil, and every 5,000 to 7,500 miles when using a quality high grade synthetic oil.
