Your car or truck’s air conditioning system is designed to be sealed, but over time, it is common for refrigerant or Freon to slowly leak out.
When the AC loses enough freon, it can no longer effectively cool the cabin. If you’ve noticed a decrease in cooling performance, it may be time for a service. Maintaining your car's AC system is important, and a Freon recharge can help restore its cooling efficiency.
To have your vehicle’s AC recharged, schedule an appointment with MDP for a professional car AC recharge in Jackson, MI, to restore your system’s cooling capabilities and ensure a comfortable driving experience.
The transition from R12 Freon to R134a Refrigerant in automotive air conditioning systems marks a significant shift for vehicle owners.
R12, also known as Freon, was widely used in vehicles manufactured before the mid-1990s. However, due to its high ozone-depleting potential, its production was phased out under the Montreal Protocol.
R134a emerged as the preferred alternative due to its negligible impact on the ozone layer. Despite being less efficient in terms of cooling capacity compared to R12, R134a is considered more environmentally friendly.
Older systems may develop small cracks leading to a Freon or refrigerant leak, which can lead to insufficient cooling and therefore, repairs and recharges. Routine maintenance can keep your vehicle performing great and prevent more expensive repairs in the future.
The conversion from R12 & R22 to R134a systems often requires retrofitting, including changes to the compressor, condenser, and refrigerant lines, to accommodate the different pressure and lubrication requirements.
Over the years, we’ve seen every possible reason why a car AC system needs to be recharged, including:
Refrigerant starts in a gaseous state. It is compressed by the air conditioner’s compressor, increasing its temperature and pressure. Then, it passes through the condenser, where it releases heat and transforms into a liquid.
This liquid refrigerant is subsequently directed through an expansion valve, where it experiences a pressure drop and reverts to a gaseous state, absorbing heat from the vehicle’s cabin as it evaporates. The evaporator absorbs heat from the hot air inside the cabin, producing cool air that is circulated back into the vehicle's interior.

Several factors play into how often your car's AC should be recharged including the age of the vehicle, the condition of the AC system, and the manufacturer’s recommendations. It’s best to have the AC system inspected and potentially recharged every two to three years unless you’re experiencing one of the issues listed above.
R12, R-22 Freon, or R134a refrigerant, is contained within a closed-loop A/C system that is sealed. However, under normal circumstances, a vehicle will lose Freon or refrigerant gradually.
